Title of research study: iDevices, AAC, and Families: A Survey of Needs

Purpose of study/research: To determine the types and amount of support families want for their children using iDevices such as iPads and iPods with communication applications as a form of augmentative and alternative communication.

Abstract/description: Subjects’ participation in the research study will involve the completion of a survey. The link will direct subjects to the survey on the SurveyMonkey website. The subjects will be directed first to the information statement for the research project. Subjects will be informed that continuing and completing the survey provides their consent for participation. The survey includes yes/no, multiple choice, and free response questions to obtain information about the types and amount of support the family would like to support their child using an iDevice and communication application(s) for communication. This information obtained will help speech-language pathologists better understand what kind of supports families need in making decisions and using this technology as an augmentative and alternative communication tool for children with communication challenges.

Participants needed: Parents or caregivers of children with autism. The participant should be considering the purchase of an iDevice and communication application(s), have an iDevice but be considering the purchase of a communication application(s), or the child should currently be using an iDevice and communication application(s) to communicate

Diagnosis: Parent or caregiver of a child with any ASD diagnosis.

    Gender specification: Either gender

    Type of participation: Survey

    IRB Human Subjects Approval: Yes

    Dates of research participation:

    Begin: Today

End: The survey will be closed March 16, 2012

    Frequency: One-time survey
