Board of Directors

OAR's Board of Directors is comprised of parents, grandparents, relatives of people with autism, and the autism professional that serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council. Combined, they represent more than 200 years of autism experience. Their family members with autism include sons, daughters, grandchildren, and siblings across the spectrum that range in age from very young to over 40. In addition to their life experiences with autism, the members of the Board bring diverse backgrounds in business and civic arenas to OAR.

The Board's responsibilities include: governing OAR, setting OAR's research direction, approving all plans for funding research and operating OAR, raising funds to support OAR's programs and activities, and ensuring that OAR's business and fiscal practices are sound and well managed. With the exception of OAR's President, all members of the Board are volunteers and receive no compensation for their service. In addition, each sets a personal goal to raise at least $10,000 annually for OAR.

OAR's Board meets every other month by teleconference and convenes in-person twice each year.

Community Council

The Community Council serves as an adjunct advisory on all matters related to OAR’s research, communication, and information programs.  OAR’s intent is to include interested stakeholders in OAR’s planning and programming in order to best match OAR’s capabilities to the community’s most pressing information needs.  Through the Community Council selected parents, siblings, self-advocates, educators, and others have the opportunity to participate in the biennial Autism Research Convocation and help shape OAR’s evolving programs and activities.  Conversely, it is through this Council that OAR monitors the pulse of the autism community.

Council members are volunteers appointed by OAR’s President for clearly defined purposes, most commonly the Autism Research Convocation or ad hoc Working Groups on topics of high interest.  OAR is currently seeking volunteers to serve on working groups in the following areas: Families, Education, Treatment, Communication, Safety, Housing, Employment, and Life Care.  Interested parties should contact the OAR Staff for details.
